Siapin Horticulture: unique landscape maintenance in California? Here at Gelson’s Market in Century City, we wanted to bring some green to the entrance which really seemed to be a concrete jungle. We went with some modern flower boxes and drought friendly succulents to really change things up. Siapin Horticulture is well known for landscape design and construction even in a downtown “concrete jungle” habitat. Chapman plaza located in Koreatown is a Los Angeles landmark. Dan and the Siapin Horticulture crew stepped up to the plate to facelift the historic property without taking the history out of this now bustling little plaza that is home to a dozen cool eateries including the Quarters Korean BBQ. Siapin Horticulture installed new trellis on the back wall for the plant life to grow upwards as well as add some classic terracotta pots to the location. Check out the video and the photos below.

Bioretention cell is a depressed area containing a backfill that is porous under a vegetated surface. Often, these areas have an underdrain to encourage infiltration as well as filtration, especially in soils that are clayey. Bioretention cells provide pollutant removal, groundwater recharge, and runoff detention. They are a practical solution in urban areas or parking lots, where green space is limited.

The company was started in 1962 by Jack Siapin with the goal of providing high quality landscape construction and maintenance throughout Southern California. In 1978 Jack’s son Daniel joined the firm and became a partner. In 1997, Jack retired selling his stock to Daniel. Daniel’s son Gabe has joined the firm and manages the Maintenance and construction division.

We installed all of those at the parking area across the street, surrounding the parking spots. We also worked on the walking area and added on decomposed walkways. Parking in this area and walking when you need a breather is now much more pleasant. The lack of water is a large problem here in California due to its severe drought causing the agriculture to diminish. To prevent this from happening, bioswales can tribute to a positive aspect of the environment. It is enjoyable for the workers who work at 2600 to experience our growth in making nature flourish.

As more and more land is developed and covered by roads, parking areas and buildings have fewer opportunities to recover rainwater naturally. Rainwater is essential to feed natural underground aquifers. Due to the reduction capacity, strategies have been developed to contain rainwater using various drainage methods. These include rainwater drainage systems, retention and storage ponds, porous sidewalks, rainwater recovery chambers, organic crops and other techniques for recovering and recycling rainwater.
