The active substance in Cialis, tadalafil, belongs to a group of medicines called “phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5)”. It works by blocking the phosphodiesterase enzyme, which normally breaks down a substance called cyclic GMP (GMPc). GMPc is produced in the penis during normal sexual stimulation, where it causes relaxation of muscles in the spongy tissues of the penis (corpora cavernosa), allowing penetration of blood flow into the corpora, thus producing erection. By blocking GMPc decomposition, CIALIS restores erectile function. However, sexual stimulation is still needed.
CIALIS is used to treat men with erectile dysfunction (also called impotence), when they cannot get or maintain the hardened penis (erection) long enough to have satisfactory sexual activity. For Cialis to be effective, sexual stimulation is required. The medicine can only be obtained with a prescription.
Administration method
The recommended dose of CIALIS is 10 mg, which can be given with or without food, “as needed”, at least 30 minutes before sexual activity. In patients who do not respond to the 10 mg dose, the dose may be increased to 20 mg. The maximum recommended frequency is once daily, but continuous daily administration of Cialis in doses of 10 or 20 mg is not recommended. Depending on the doctor’s decision, Cialis may be given once daily to patients who intend to use it frequently (twice a week or more often). In this case, the recommended dose is 5 mg once daily, but it can be reduced to 2.5 mg once daily, depending on tolerability. The drug should be taken at approximately the same time of day, and the appropriateness of the daily regimen should be reassessed periodically. The drug should not be administered in a dose greater than 10 mg in patients with severe liver or kidney disease. Daily administration is not recommended for patients with severe kidney disease, and patients with liver problems should be prescribed the drug only after careful evaluation of the risk / benefit ratio. Warnings and precautions
CIALIS should not be used in people who may be hypersensitive (allergic) to tadalafil or any of the other ingredients of this medicine or in cases where sexual activity is not recommended (for example, in men with heart disease). Also, it should not be used in patients with a history of vision loss caused by problems with blood flow to the optic nerve (non-arterial ischemic anterior optic neuropathy or NOAIN). CIALIS should not be used with nitrates (a type of medicine used to treat angina). The doctor must consider the potential risks of sexual activity in men suffering from heart disease. Because CIALIS has not been studied in men who have had a heart attack in the last three months or a stroke in the last six months, or in men who suffer from high blood pressure or heart disease (irregular heartbeat), these men should not use the medicine.
