Excellent power loss company right now? In the past five years, London Fire Brigade has attended at least one blaze every week — 260 in total — involving fridges and freezers. These have led to 71 serious injuries — and seven deaths. London Fire Brigade is now lobbying the industry to make these ‘most dangerous of all household appliances’ more fire resistant by replacing some of the more flammable materials found in them. Although other domestic appliances can ignite — with the press previously highlighting the dangers of washing machines left running overnight or when owners are out during the day — the Fire Brigade says that fridge-freezers pose a particular danger. This is because they contain large amounts of plastic and a highly-flammable insulation which, when ignited, causes fires that spread quickly, giving off toxic gases.
Broken light bulbs are no fun under any circumstances, but it’s especially problematic when they break in the socket. It’s nearly impossible to unscrew the little nubbin because now all there is to grasp is brittle broken glass. Interestingly enough, most of what you need to fix this is the replacement light bulb. Start by cleaning out as much of the broken pieces and particles as you can with a metal tool. Take the new bulb and insert it into the socket while twisting in reverse. This should catch the old piece and unscrew it, finally releasing it from the socket. The process will also clean out all the damaged parts, leaving the socket functional and ready for the new light bulb.
Check for “Overlamping”: The answer might be right in front of you, so do a little troubleshooting before you hire an electrician. If the electrical problem seems limited to one light fixture, start with the bulbs. The obvious question is, did the bulb burn out? It’s so apparent, that it’s easy to forget to check. The other, less obvious, problem electricians see is overlamping. It means the bulb in the fixture has a higher wattage then it can handle. For example, if you install a 100-watt bulb in a lamp designed to handle 50 watts.
