I won’t bore you with stories about where these came from; I’ll just give you a list of funny and sarcastic statuses. I have tried to include the authors for the lines I did not develop on my own. “Don’t let your mind wander-it’s too little to be let out alone.” – Posting, reading, and responding to status updates is an integral part of many peoples’ daily lives. However, the role of personality in predicting social responses to status updates remains largely unexplored. Based on the social enhancement and the social compensation hypothesis, we assessed the role of extraversion and social anxiety in predicting social responses to status updates.
Deters and her colleague recruited about 100 undergraduates (all Facebook users) at the University of Arizona. All participants filled out initial surveys to measure their levels of loneliness, happiness and depression, and they gave the researchers access to their Facebook profiles by friending a dummy user created for the experiment. The students were sent an analysis of their average weekly status updates (online wall-memos) and some of the participants were then told to post more statuses than usual over the next seven days. During that week, all completed a short online questionnaire at the end of each day about their mood and level of social connection. See additional details on http://www.status.desi/sad-status/.
Whenever I hop onto Facebook to do something specific—find a link I saved for later or see what’s happening on Buffer’s Facebook page, perhaps—something strange happens. Despite my best intentions to stay on track and accomplish my goal, I get sucked in. Suddenly I’m checking my own notifications, looking at what’s been recently posted and generally forgetting why I came to Facebook in the first place. This isn’t entirely by accident. There is science and psychology that explains why so many of us are glued to Facebook.
You have realized that Facebook is the perfect place to inundate everyone you know on social media with photos of your perfect kids, being all cute and saying the most hilarious things ever ? what a good mom you are! You’re so selfless! You’re the person that people block from their feed just in time for election season, and when one of your political posts accidentally gets through, they seriously consider blocking you permanently. You’re just sooo overbearing and quite the know-it-all. “Ugh. This day was the worst. No one ask why!” “I’m really sick of your shit. You can’t even be a good friend anymore. You know who you are.” Basically, it’s like junior high school all over again with you. Fun. See extra information on http://status.desi/.
