Mcusta is a Japanese knife-making company. All knives are made in Seki, Japan. “Mcusta” is a combination of “machine” and “custom.” They start out with the machine process and are then enhanced with custom work. Normally, Mcusta does folding knives and kitchen cutlery, but they’re branching out to the hunting sectors. The Sport 100, 200, and 300 are the most interesting knives featured at their SHOT Show 2023 booth. The designer wasn’t able to make them for a few years, so he’s happy to have Mcusta bring them back to the market. It has a BG10 Core Damascus blade with a hammered finish. The different versions have slight differences in design, but the same blade and finish.
Forgive us for stating the obvious, but the term ‘pocket knife’ refers to a handled blade which can be carried within a person’s pocket. And the most common iteration is the folder – a knife which has the ability to collapse into itself for easy, convenient, and safe portability. Typically, their blades fall between 2-6 inches in length and are made of some type of steel alloy. The handles are most often composed of metal, synthetics, and/or naturally occurring materials like wood or stone. And, though common conception would like to dictate otherwise, they are more practical tool than deadly weapon. What you may not know, however, is that the story of the pocket knife is thousands of years in the making and dates back further than the Roman Empire.
What is the specialty of the butterfly knife? The handle is formed by two longitudinal halves with a U-shaped section, which are pivotally connected to the blade shank. When the knife is opened, the halves of the handle rotate 180 degrees in the opposite direction relative to the blade, expose the blade and then form the handle, connecting to each other. How is a balisong different from a butterfly knife? Balisong is a type of folding knife. Its peculiarity is that in the folded position the blade is closed by two longitudinal halves of the handle. They resemble wings, which gave the second name to the tool – a butterfly knife.
Camillus: Formed in 1876, Camillus is one of the oldest American knife manufacturers. While their focus was/is not strictly on the creation of pocket knives, they have made some notable entries. Namely, they manufactured a folding knife/spook for the Red Cross during WWI. In 1947, they created a full line of official folding knives for the Boy Scouts of America. They also manufactured a 4-blade utility knife for the U.S. Armed Forces during the Vietnam War. Unfortunately, they went bankrupt in 2007 as a result of their inability to compete with overseas competition. Now they are owned and operated by Acme United Corporation and, as far as we can tell, no longer manufacture American-made folding knives.
Buck kept everything people love about the classic Buck 110: It has a tried-and-true back lock design. The neutral handle shape with textured handle scales makes for a comfortable and secure grip in wet or dry conditions. The hollow ground blade is a real slicer. I love that Buck updated this knife and kept the manufacturing here in the U.S., which is rare for knives in this price category. If you’re on a tight budget but still want quality, it’s going to be very hard to beat this updated classic.
Benchmade is a US knife manufacturer located in Oregon. They identified a few interesting knives for 2023, expanding on a few old favorites. Those knives include an expansion on the Shootout franchise, one of their most popular category of knives. They also have a new knife called the Narrows, and they added another knife added to the Immunity family. The Shootout was originally developed for the law enforcement community. It had a glass breaker with an out-the-front blade. What they recognized is that it’s a fantastic EDC knife. The out-the-front blade allows you to make a cut and then retract it without having to change your grip, allowing an economy of motion. They added a blue color option, offering all of the Shootout features without it looking overly tactical.
